In “Hand of Glory” two gangster types - Johnny and Vernon - are walking up to the front door of what may be the home of some witches. Rather, in this review I want to emphasize some other merits of this book, which I believe are represented in Barron’s other works as well.įirst, I don’t know if this is new, or perhaps I just missed it in his earlier stories, but I noticed some great humor, especially in character dialogue. Lovecraft - as well as Barron’s own gritty noir-like style. Let me emphasize that this collection is in keeping with what I, and many others, have come to love and expect from Barron: a great combination of cosmic horror feel - which many associate with the early pulp writer H. As with his prior volumes, this one continues to meet, and exceed, the bar of contemporary horror stories, showing that Barron is still one of the leading horror voices of today. This highly anticipated book marks Barron’s third collection of short stories (and fourth book), following both of his Shirley Jackson Award-winning collections The Imago Sequence and Occultation, as well as his 2012 debut novel, The Croning. I'm always a stickler for historical accuracy, but it didn't detract from my enjoyment of this book too much.Īll in all, I greatly enjoyed The Hope of Azure Springs and look forward to reading more from this talented author! Also, some of the dialogue and description seemed historically innaccurate\inauthentic. As well, the writing style seemed a little oversimplified at times, which is probably just my personal preference. The romance was slow and sweet and pure, just the way I like it.Ī couple of my quibbles: Eliza, as mentioned above. Fordham did a fabulous job with that subject. I feel like so many romances put such weight on the physical and often forget inner beauty entirely. The story, while a bit slow at times, was heartwarming and enthralling. There are more effective ways to show the contrast, in my opinion. I see why she was necessary to show how Em was different, but I feel like Eliza ended up being unrealistic. I also loved the secondary cast of Mae and Milly, Margaret, and the Howells, with the exception of Eliza. I loved their sweet relationship, easy banter, and lighthearted competition. Wow! A fabulous debut from Rachel Fordham!īoth the cover and the description had me hooked when I first saw this on Netgalley, and I'm so glad I decided to read it! It was so lovely to step into this simply-written small-town historical story with heart-melting characters, a sweet romance, and even gun-toting outlaws.īoth Caleb and Em were unique and realistic MCs with so much depth to their characters. More than that, 'John Updike's Rabbit at Rest: Appropriating History' reveals how and why that history is used. Following what Professor Ristoff calls a 'scene-centered approach' such as he used in 'Updike's America', his earlier study of the first three Rabbit novels, Professor Ristoff provides an in-depth examination of Updike's extensive use of contemporary American history. «Dilvo Ristoff's new study of John Updike's fourth Rabbit novel, 'Rabbit at Rest', is essential reading for every Updike scholar. Then he answers softly, “Okay, pretty girl. With my back still to him I whisper again, “You can’t freak out, okay?” I turn my face away from him and open the door fully for him to follow me inside. He rolls his eyes heavenward and sighs but nods his head. Hiding most of my face, I say quietly, “You can’t freak out, okay?” With shaking hands, I unlock the front door and open it a few inches. It’s either him or Tina, and there’s no way I’d let Tina see me like this. I really don’t want him to see me like this, but I don’t really have a choice.
